Happy new year everybody. I'm writing this sitting more...
Arriving at probably the most famous recording studio in the world at about 5pm, just as the evening was beginning to draw in, we were ushered into the artists area and introduced to Alex, the engineer, Bill Rock & Ted Kelly of Worldspace and briefed as to what we were to expect and to the schedule of events.
A couple of wines later (our new favourite pre-gig tradition) and it was the 7pm showtime. Engineers, assistants and producers running around on our behalf, frantically ensuring everything was ready for us. It was great having people offering us drinks, raising our mike stands to the required levels and showing us how to use our individual mixers we had so we could get the best possible headphone mix. This was something quite different from a run of the mill gig. Wearing headphones at a gig (as the session was essentially a recording session) was a slightly disconcerting experience as, normally at live gigs, you get used to the cacophony of sound swirling around and encompassing you. This was loud outside the sanctity of the headphones but inside our cans we had a beautiful, crisp mix, tailored to our individual tastes.
One last swig of water and we were off…..
Einstein declared time to be relative, but this was just a cruel example, as the 30 minutes were over in no time. Everyone played a blinder. Old Rob “Bob Meakin” hit the granny out of the drums, Noel played like the guitar hero he is, Ellie dazzled and bewitched. I was just pleased to be amongst it as I banged away on my trusty musicman.
At the end of the set, Alex the engineer came down and said it was “amazing”, Travis, who had been filming the event declared it “…fucking awesome…” . We were interviwed for radio in both English and Italian. People wanted to shake our hands. We were asked to autograph a huge poster. We felt adored, we felt appreciated. We felt fucking great. We had engaged with the most famous recording studio in the world and it had smiled at us. Sharing it amongst ourselves made it even more special.
